The Village Temple’s Social Action Committee strives to be an action and advocacy-oriented group working to integrate Jewish social justice values into the whole life of the Congregation.
In the past year, the Social Action Committee has engaged Temple members in discussion and action on the genocide in Darfur, Hurricane Katrina relief, Downtown Kehillah Mitzvah Day, GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender) inclusion, and issues related to Israel, among other topics.
The Social Action Committee also connects the Temple to the U.S. Reform Movement’s Religious Action Center and other Jewish national and local social justice initiatives. A highlight of the past year was in April 2006, when 53 Temple members and friends joined tens of thousands of other concerned citizens at the Save Darfur Rally in Washington, DC. In the coming year, the Social Action Committee will continue the effort to extend our commitment as a congregation to tikkun olam (repairing the world).
If you are interested in taking a more active role in the Temple’s social justice efforts, please consider joining the Social Action Committee. Members of any age, youth through adult, are welcome to participate. For more information, contact Frank Bamberger, 718-858-3171 frank_bamberger@compuserve.com.
