Beyond the Shtetl: Who are the Jews of the Former Soviet Union?
Who are the Jews of the Former Soviet Union, and where do their stories begin?
Join Rabbi Alex Tansky for a fascinating two-session journey through more than 2,500 years of Jewish history. Together, we will trace the origins of the diverse Jewish communities that came to live throughout the Russian Empire and the Former Soviet Union, including Ashkenazi, Bukharian, and Mountain (Gorsky) Jews. From the ancient Jewish communities of Babylonia and Persia to the shtetls of Eastern Europe, the Pale of Settlement, the Soviet era, and the remarkable revival of Jewish life in our own time, we will explore the customs, languages, traditions, and stories that reveal the extraordinary diversity, resilience, and enduring spirit of the Jewish communities of the Former Soviet Union.

Join us for Shabbat services at 6, and the opening of I Lift Up My Eyes, a community art remembrance marking 25 years since 9/11/2001.
On 9/11, we experienced unimaginable loss. In the years that followed, we carried our grief, cared for one another, and began to heal.
From the start of Elul through Ne’ila on Yom Kippur, I Lift Up My Eyes will gather our memories and hopes into a shared horizon. Above, an open sky will invite us to breathe, remember, and look toward healing and hope.
We invite you to take part in this art remembrance by sharing a memory, reflection, or hope.
We also hold the specific memory of our closest loved ones in our hearts. Whom among your loved ones will you be remembering this year at Yizkor on Yom Kippur? In whose name will you be giving to tzedakah this year?
On August 21st join us for in-person Shabbat and the opening of I Lift Up My Eyes to add a card or note into the communal horizon.
The exhibit will be up all throughout the month of Elul for you to come by the temple and add your remembrances and hopes into the horizon.
Please extend this invitation to neighbors and friends to widen community participation so that when we are standing in the exhibit we feel surrounded by each other, our stories, experiences, and hopes.
